Approval granted for residential towers in Sydney's Chatswood

A two-tower proposal comprising 258 homes has been approved for development in Chatswood, Sydney.

Designed by Carter Williamson Architects with Land and Form Studios, the state significant project was approved by the NSW Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure following its exhibition in June 2025.

The towers will be located at 38-42 Anderson Street, 3 McIntosh Street and 2 Day Street, approximately 300 metres from the Chatswood Transport Interchange. Rising 23 and 33 storeys from a shared brick podium, the towers will together accommodate 258 apartments. Of these, 56 affordable housing units will be managed by a registered community housing provider for a minimum of 15 years. The podium will feature commercial and retail offerings internally and communal open spaces on top. A new public domain surrounding the development will also be introduced.

Carter Williamson Architects with landscape architect Land and Form Studios won an invited design excellence competition for the project in 2024. A key conceptual driver of the design is a mature angophora tree on the site, which inspired the exterior colour palette and determined the form of the podium. In addition, the development has been named The Angophora.

According to a communique from the architects, the development is part of the broader Chatswood CBD Strategy 2036, which aims to increase the supply of well-located housing near public transport, employment opportunities and community amenities.

Principal Shaun Carter said the approval reflects the evolution of Chatswood's city-shaping potential.

"The Angophora shows how density can be delivered with care, where homes are filled with light and air, where architecture strengthens the public realm, and where affordable housing is integrated into the fabric of the city. We are proud to contribute to a project that responds to its context today while supporting the community's needs into the future," said Carter.
